SAI Motors have been produced since 1964 and over that time there has been ongoing

 EVOLUTION

Whilst the Basic operating principal has been retained, other modifications have resulted in Model changes.

The table below is intended to help you identify some of the older motors and explain how they fit in with the current SAI products.

IMPORTANT Installation Notes:

This section outlines how the latest Range differs from earlier Models with respect to installation.

Prior to the introduction of the GM range, the various model changes had little or no effect on interchangeability.

The GM range however has some basic physical differences meaning that, as standard, they do not interchange. In certain sizes, special Motors can be produced enabling the fitting of a GM Motor where one of its predecessors was used previously.

GM05 / M05: Generally speaking, the GM05 DOES interchange with the M05.  There are however some slight differences as follows. The GM05 is 5mm longer than the M05 and, at 205mm, it is approximately 7mm larger in overall diameter . This makes the GM05 approximately 5Kg heavier, but all main mounting features are identical.

GM1 / M1 or L1 and earlier Derivatives: Only slight differences exist between the mounting details of the GM1 and those of the M1 (L1). See GUIDANCE DRAWING. Many of these can be overcome by using the nearest equivalent displacement GM05 with a GM1 Conversion Flange. The GM1 is approximately 4mm longer and 7mm larger in diameter than its predecessors. It is also some 5Kg heavier. All GM1 Motors have mounting slots  whereas certain ones of its forerunners had circular holes in the mounting lugs. The LENGTH of the Mounting Location on the GM1 is 5mm whereas on the earlier motors this was just 3mm. This is important where the front face of the locating spigot seals against an O ring (sometimes used on Gearbox applications) or if going into a very shallow, blind, location. The slots on all GM1 motors are 14mm wide meaning it is advisable to fit substantial washers if re-using 10mm fixings which were often used with the M1 and its forerunners. The 10mm fixing is considered adequate if used in this way, although the GM1 would normally be fitted using 12mm bolts. A few M1 motor derivatives were fitted, usually to Gearboxes, using an extra 3 off M12 Tapped holes in the front mounting flange on 140mm PCD, this feature is NOT available with the GM1 Motor but can sometimes be got around by using the nearest equivalent displacement GM05 with a GM1 Conversion Flange. See GUIDANCE DRAWING

GM2 / M2 and MU300: The GM2 is approximately 5mm longer than the previous models. The Standard GM2 has mounting slots on 250 PCD whereas the M2 and MU300 had them on 195 PCD. See GUIDANCE DRAWING. For Motors with the 36 UNI 220 Shaft, and where the displacement requires the "standard" throw Crankshaft, a special Motor can be supplied to fully interchange with respect to the Mounting and the Shaft. This same variant can be supplied with all other shafts and displacements BUT in each case the Shaft protrusion will be 25mm LESS than that of the equivalent M2 Motor (request further explanation if needed). See GUIDANCE DRAWING for the complete interchange only.

GM3 / M3 or L3 and earlier Derivatives: There is a SPECIAL version of the GM3 known as the GM3A which fully interchanges with the M3. The Motor is slightly longer and the Drain Ports are in a different position but otherwise the motor will mount where its predecessors once did. See GUIDANCE DRAWING.

GM4 / M4 and MU800: and larger - details in preparation - please ask.
